Winter Spa Maintenance Tips

Looking for a Winter Pool Spa Maintenance Guide? In Australia, the winters are not as severe as they are elsewhere. However, it's likely that you won't be using your pool all that much in the winter.

Some spa maintenance methods will help you save money and time, maintain your pool ready for the upcoming swimming season, and ensure that it is ready to run once spring arrives.

Start Cleaning Pool Surfaces

Cleaning your pool's surfaces is the first step in putting it into winter mode. Pick up any apparent organic and inorganic garbage with a skimmer. Although your skimmer baskets are excellent at keeping material off the pool's surface, they are not foolproof. The filtration system in your home operates similarly.

The filter and skimmer basket for your pool help remove organic and inorganic matter, but if left unattended, they can quickly break down.  Your filtration system will function more effectively and organic material will be reduced if you set periods each week for skimming your pool's surfaces.

Wall surfaces should also be cleaned by brushing or scrubbing to remove any algae, dirt, or debris that may have been collected. You can also use a vacuum cleaner or pressure washer to remove tough spots from the walls and floor during spa cleaning.  Once the walls and floor are clean, it's time to add winterising chemicals to your pool. Check the pH level of the pool water and adjust it if necessary. You should also add a winterising shock to the pool, which will kill any bacteria or algae that may have been missed during the cleaning process.

Finally, don't forget to cover your pool with a winter cover. This will help protect it from the elements and keep debris and other contaminants out. Make sure to check the cover periodically to ensure it is tight and secure.

Vacuum

Other than on the water's surface of your pool, other organic material resides elsewhere. You should routinely use pool accessories to scour every surface to stop the growth of algae. Start by cleaning the pool's surfaces with a vacuum and a pool broom.  You should also check and clean the skimmer baskets, the filter, and the pump.

Also, check the pool lines for any dirt and debris. If you see leaves or other organic material floating on the top of the water, remove it as soon as possible.  If you have a pool cover, make sure to clean it regularly as well. Leaves and other debris may have accumulated on the cover, so make sure to use a pool brush to scrub these away.

Finally, check the water chemistry. Test the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels to make sure they are balanced. Unbalanced water can help contribute to algae growth. Making sure the pH is between 7.2 and 7.6 and the alkalinity is between 80 and 120 ppm can help prevent algae from growing in the pool.

Use Pool Cover

When the weather is too cold to use your pool, a pool or leaf cover comes in handy. Extra leaves and other debris will be kept out of your pool with a leaf cover.  Pool covers should be removed and thoroughly cleaned before putting your pool away for the winter because they have downsides and aren't the best at keeping your pool clean.

If you intend to keep swimming over the winter, you could prefer a pool blanket to a leaf cover in order to help the pool heater retain heat.  In addition to a pool cover, a pool pump and filter should be used to keep your pool clean. Conduct a regular spa service and repair and the pump and filter should be checked regularly for damage, and the filter should be cleaned regularly. The pump should be run for several hours a day to circulate the water and keep it clean.

Finally, a pool cleaner can be used to clean the bottom of the pool. This can be done manually with a brush or vacuum, or it can be done automatically with a robotic or suction-side pool cleaner. These cleaners are great for keeping the pool clean, but they can be expensive.

Pool Blankets

Pool blankets serve the following purposes and offer several advantages over covers.

  • They are the best option during summer because they help keep heat in.  Pool covers prevent evaporation, so there is no concern throughout the winter.

  • They lessen the need for water top-ups.

  • They support keeping the chemical balance in your pool in check.

  • They reduce the amount of debris that can get into the pool.

  • They are much easier to remove and put back on than covers, as they are lightweight and can be folded for storage.

  • Pool blankets help to maintain the desired temperature of the pool water, reduce energy costs, and protect your pool from the elements.

  • They are much easier to install and remove than pool covers.

  • They also reduce the amount of water lost due to evaporation, which means you won't have to top up your pool as much.

  • Pool blankets protect your pool from dirt, leaves, and other debris.

  • This means you'll have to spend less time cleaning your pool.

  • They are also a great way to keep your pool heated during the colder months.

  • Pool blankets can be used as an additional source of insulation, helping to reduce energy costs.

  • Finally, they are much safer than pool covers as they are not as prone to blowing away in the wind.

Solar Spa Maintenance System

Another excellent method of winter spa maintenance to prevent the water from freezing and keep swimming is to use a solar heater. A solar pool heater can be a great option for soaking up the sun's rays, even if you'll still lose heat at night and on those overcast days.

Even if you don't intend to swim, a solar heater can help keep your pool clear of extra rainwater, hazardous germs, algae, and other contaminants.  In addition to installing a solar heater, you can also cover your pool with a thermal pool cover to help maintain the temperature of the water. This cover will trap the heat from the sun and keep your pool warm. It also helps to prevent evaporation and protects your pool from debris and insects.

Lastly, consider adding a water fountain or waterfall feature to your pool. Not only will this add a beautiful aesthetic to your poolscape, but it will also help to keep the water moving and prevent the water from freezing.  Regardless of the weather, you can still enjoy your pool all year round with a bit of extra preparation.

Pool Pump Maintenance

Regardless of the season, your pool's pump aids in maintaining a healthy pool. But in order to make sure it's functioning properly, you must put these important spa cleaning techniques into practice:

  • Keep your motor dry to avoid moisture leaks, which might result in expensive repairs.

  • To prevent your motor from overheating and "burning out," replace loud bearings. Spend some time thoroughly cleaning the pump's basket as well.

  • Use a dampened cloth to clean the motor and other pump surfaces even though you should avoid getting the motor wet.

  • Have a yearly checkup from a qualified professional for the best benefits. Make sure you're using the correct size and type of filter media to help keep the pool clean.

  • Replace the filter media when necessary to reduce strain on the pump motor and ensure optimal performance.

  • Check for any debris such as twigs, leaves, or rocks, and remove them from the pump and filter.

  • Inspect the pool's plumbing for any blockages or kinks, and replace any worn or damaged parts.

  • Perform regular chemical treatments to ensure that your water is safe for swimming.

  • Finally, be sure to check the pump's voltage and amperage to ensure it's within the manufacturer's specifications.
